Ingredients
2 C Orleans molasses
1 tsp. baking soda
1 C brown sugar
1 1/2 C shortening
8 C flour
1 tsp. ginger
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
1 tsp. freshly grated orange peel
Directions
1. In a large saucepan, combine everything except the soda. Warm thoroughly but do not scald. Remove from heat.
2. Add baking soda to melted mixture. This will turn it light and foamy. Add flour and mix until smooth. Mixture will be VERY stiff.
3. Let cool until able to roll out
4. Roll out very very thin, cut into shapes. Bake on ungreased cookie sheet @ 375 degrees for a very short time as they scorch very easily.
note: Do NOT refrigerate these. The original recipe stated to let these sit in the fridge for a couple of days. The dough turns rock hard and doesn’t soften up. Seriously, I could knock someone out if I hit them with this after it being in the fridge. I slammed it down on the counter and was afraid I damaged the granite. Two days after I took it out of the fridge, I tried to flatten it out with a meat tenderizer. No luck.
